Does insurance cover LASIK eye surgery?

Before you consider the procedure, it's important to understand your insurance coverage.

What is LASIK?

LASIK surgery is performed by an eye doctor and uses a special cutting laser to reshape the clear lens that covers and protects the front area of the eye. This can help fix vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

Some insurance companies offer discounts on the procedure, but most health and vision plans don't cover LASIK because it is typically considered as an elective procedure.

When insurance does cover LASIK

Although health and vision plans often exclude LASIK from coverage, there are some exceptions.

Medical necessity is a potential exception to exclusion. If you are diagnosed with a specific medical condition that makes wearing glasses or contacts a health risk, your medical insurance may cover LASIK.

Coverage may be available if LASIK is needed as a treatment for an eye injury, severe refractive errors, or medical conditions like corneal scarring.

For people in certain professions, such as military personnel or first responders, LASIK benefits may be offered to help meet vision standards. This is because of job requirements or potential dangers caused by wearing glasses or contacts during their work.

Partial coverage may also be available if you belong to a large specialty union.

Breaking down the cost of LASIK

The price of LASIK surgery can vary but typically it costs several thousand dollars. Costs often depend on the level of vision correction needed, the type of equipment used, and where you live.

The total cost may also include office visits, equipment used in your procedure, facility fees, and medications needed before or after the surgery. Insurance may cover aspects of this process, but not the surgery itself.

It's important to ask in advance what is and is not included in the price quote you've been given, including whether the price is for one or both eyes.

Ways to reduce costs

After confirming your insurance plan's coverage policy, start by exploring any employer benefits or vision discount programs that may provide cost savings.

If you have a flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA), these funds can typically be used to pay for LASIK with pre-tax dollars that have been set aside specifically for health-related expenses.

You can also ask your LASIK provider if they offer financing options or payment plans to help with the cost of the procedure.
